Microsoft’s integrated antivirus software, called Windows Security now, does not require subscription. It’s also completely free. It is highly regarded by the top AV testing labs across the globe, and offers solid malware protection without affecting the performance of your system. It includes additional features such as ransomware protection, a password manager and other useful features. It lacks some of the most important features that are found in premium antivirus suites, and isn’t particularly user-friendly.
Protection against threats and viruses includes the usual quick, full and custom scans, as well as an intensive offline scan mode that can tackle difficult-to-get rid of threats. The firewall and network protection module is pretty easy to use, though it’s not as robust as other options. Its biggest drawback, however, is that it’s only available on Windows devices which means if you want to protect an Android or Mac Mac or Android phone, you’ll have to find a different solution.
Family options include parental controls and the capability to monitor the health of your family’s devices. There’s even a password manager in the Edge browser, which will be synced with other devices. The downside is that you aren’t able to manage the features directly from the app and you must use a web browser to access them.
It differs from most antivirus programs because it does not hook itself into the Windows Kernel. This could provide new attack opportunities for hackers, and can destabilize the operating system. It also has good behavior detection and helps users avoid accidentally downloading malicious files.
